‘Big mistake’: Chelsea fans react to possible loan move for defender

Chelsea fans were left red-faced when they learned Fikayo Tomori may be loaned out in January, urging the club to send away another defender instead.

Frank Lampard confirmed after his side defeated Morecambe in the FA Cup that he’ll be considering options for the 23-year-old.

“There is a possibility that he (Tomori) could be going on loan to get games somewhere else,” he told reporters (via HaytersTV).

“It would have to be the right solution for him and the club.”

Nizaar Kinsella was one of the journalists to break this news on Twitter, and it’s safe to say some supporters were not best pleased with the decision.

Tomori came on for the final ten minutes in place of Kurt Zouma in the 3-0 win over Morecambe, making just his fourth appearance of the campaign.

Zouma and Thiago Silva have forged a partnership in defence since the Brazilians arrival, sending every other central-defender down the pecking order.

But, despite his minimal game time, there was a loud cry for Chelsea to keep hold of Tomori, sacrificing another in his place.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen were the suggested pair to be surrendered in order to keep Tomori within the walls of Stamford Bridge.

Rudiger started at home to Morecambe, his seventh game of the season, regardless of the fact Sky Sports believed he was one of two at Chelsea most likely to leave in January.

Christensen meanwhile has also only featured on seven occasions, currently recovering from a knee injury sustained in the draw to Aston Villa last month.

Lampard now has a difficult decision to make about his supporting cast members; who to keep on set and who to cut from the production.

From social media’s reaction, the preference would be for Tomori, who was raised through the academy, to stay put and continue his development where he started out.

I too would favour a move for Rudiger or Christensen rather than Tomori, because I believe ability wise, he is superior to both of his teammates.

I was really impressed with his performances last year and for Derby County, and Tomori will be learning on the job from one of the best in Thiago Silva if he does stick around.
