Financial expert Adam Williams has exclusively told The Chelsea Chronicle that there is no pressure for Chelsea to sell players before July 1, and the 2025/26 PSR deadline.
PSR and FFP rulings have refused to leave the Blues alone in the Todd Boehly era, with many knowing that the Blues need to sell again this summer.
The deal for Marc Cucurella to leave for Real Madrid has already been confirmed, with the Blues only making a minor loss after signing him four years ago.
Who will be a bigger success – Enzo Maresca or Xabi Alonso? 🤔
City have confirmed Maresca will replace Guardiola.
Chelsea do not need to sell before PSR deadline
Despite many other players being linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge, Williams told us that there is no pressure for the Blues to announce any sales before the PSR deadline of June 30.
He said: “Chelsea are under significant pressure when it comes to the Premier League and UEFA’s spending rules, but it’s next season when that really starts to ratchet up, so they aren’t under pressure to sell players today specifically, which is officially the last day of their 2025-26 accounting period.
“Under the terms of their UEFA settlement for 2025-26, they simply needed to stay within the loss limit they were projecting when that agreement was struck. So unless they have got their calculations badly wrong, they don’t need to do any business before the financial year rolls over for the purposes of that settlement. From next season, which officially starts tomorrow, things get a lot more difficult, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Williams also went on to say that Chelsea’s ‘creative accounting’ has been a key reason why they are not in any immediate danger when it comes to PSR.
He said: “Similarly, in terms of Premier League PSR, Chelsea have already effectively broken that system with the sales of assets to themselves. That is one of the reasons that the Premier League has actually introduced SCR, because Chelsea short-circuited the old system. Today is the final day of PSR, the system under which you can lose a maximum of £105m over three seasons, but that’s immaterial really because Chelsea have managed to get around it with creative accounting. So again, they aren’t under immediate pressure to make sales.
“Going forward, Premier League SCR gives teams some flexibility over a few seasons to get costs under control, so I don’t anticipate that Chelsea will breach it next season. Or, at least, they won’t break the rules which lead to a sporting sanction. The settlement at UEFA level, however, will require major surgery this summer. I struggle to see how they avoid breaching that agreement. So, yes, they are under significant pressure, but that’s a longer-term thing rather than today.“

Chelsea still linked with big player sales
While Reece James and Moises Caicedo have committed their futures to Chelsea, there are a number of other stars who have given no certainty over staying at the club.
Enzo Fernandez has been vocal in his desire to secure his own move to Madrid, however so far the Spanish giants have been unwilling to reach the transfer fee which the Blues are demanding.
With no other clubs coming to the fore to potentially sign him, the Argentina international could soon have to accept that his immediate future may remain at Stamford Bridge.
This would certainly be to Xabi Alonso’s advantage, giving him another key piece to build his own Chelsea side around.
