Borussia Dortmund managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke has commented on Chelsea’s misleading Premier League struggles ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
Both Chelsea and Dortmund won their respective league match this weekend — but their situation could not be more different.
It was Chelsea’s first win in seven games following three consecutive defeats. It may help boost their confidence, but they likely felt more relieved than anything else amid the pressure.
Dortmund, on the other hand, extended their winning streak to 10 games after beating RB Leipzig at the weekend..
It was far from their best performance, but Edin Terzic’s men are on an exceptional run.
While Chelsea are fighting just to maintain their spot in the top half of the Premier League table, Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga, only behind Bayern Munich on goal difference.
However, Chelsea’s struggles this season are deceptive, according to Dortmund director Watzke.

“Nobody should believe that 10th place in the Premier League reflects Chelsea’s sporting quality,” the Dortmund chief told Ruhr Nachrithten ahead of the second leg.
“The knot can burst at any time, after all, they have spent more than €600million on transfers in eight months.”
Watzke, however, also insisted that Dortmund’s one-goal advantage could prove decisive
“The fact that we have the feeling before the second leg in London that we can get through says everything to me,” he explained.
It is true that, on paper, Chelsea should have the quality to turn around the situation.
That said, there is also a reason why no team has defeated Dortmund since the World Cup break.
