Borussia Dortmund could be without their top scorer against Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic suggests they could be without his first-choice striker Youssoufa Moukoko in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Chelsea due to an injury.

Dortmund, who sit third in Bundesliga, could not afford to rest key players at the weekend ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Signal Iduna Park.

Terzic’s decision to field arguably his strongest line-up paid off with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen as Dortmund maintain a three-point distance to league leaders Bayern Munich.

Unfortunately, the win also came at a price. Moukoko, who is the joint-top scorer at the club alongside Julian Brandt, sustained an injury and was forced off after just 30 minutes into the game.

Terzic said Dortmund are still hoping for a positive scan result, but the early signs did not look promising.

“We don’t yet have an exact diagnosis, but it doesn’t look good,” the Dortmund boss said about Moukoko’s injury situation after the game.

“There were one or two stupid moments on the pitch that we could’ve all done without.

“We’re crossing our fingers for Youssoufa. We’ll know more on Monday.”

If Moukoko cannot return against Chelsea, Dortmund will likely have to rely on 34-year-old Anthony Modeste or Sebastian Haller who recently returned from a long absence after battling testicular cancer.

While for Chelsea, Kai Havertz is likely going to lead the line with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and David Datro Fofana not registered in the Champions League.
