Darren Bent has backed Jordan Pickford to start ahead of Aaron Ramsdale at the World Cup.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent believed it would be cruel to drop the Everton goalkeeper in place of Arsenal’s Ramsdale in Qatar.
Pickford has held down the number one jersey since the previous World Cup in Russia and is yet to give Gareth Southgate a reason to remove that from him.
The 28-year-old has been something of an underrated hero at the last two major competitions.
He stepped up when required in the penalty shootout in Russia against Colombia, then did everything in his power to prevent Italy in the European Championship final last summer.
Whilst his form in an Everton shirt has gone through waves in the past four years, representing England has never been an issue.
Although Pickford’s rivals for the primary ‘keeper spot – Ramsdale and Nick Pope – have performed better domestically this season, they do not yet have the international pedigree.
“Pickford has never let England down. Listen, I think Ramsdale is a better goalkeeper,” said Bent on who he’d pick between the sticks this winter.
“But Pickford for England has been brilliant. It would be harsh to leave him out when he’s been as good as he has for England.”
Chelsea to keep a close eye on Pickford
Chelsea will seemingly hope Pickford gets the nod from Southgate again.
Graham Potter’s employers will reportedly be watching Everton’s £30m goalie intently at the World Cup.
Todd Boehly is apparently compiling a list of players to possibly replace Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion has been mentioned as one of the options.
Pickford is the other Premier League shot stopper earning a shout out.
