Canoville believes Chelsea can unleash Lukaku by bringing in club legend as coach

Former Chelsea winger Paul Canoville has urged the club to sign Didier Drogba as a coach to help bring the best out of out-of-form Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku’s goal in the World Cup semifinal win over Al Hilal secured Chelsea a ticket to the final, but his record of eight goals in all competitions so far is still far below early expectations.

It is unlikely that he needs more time to adapt to a new environment and a new league given he had already had 113 goals prior to his second Chelsea arrival.

His bright start earlier in the season also suggests that his direct playstyle could still work in Thomas Tuchel’s possession-based football.

Not to mention that the 28-year-old is not the only Chelsea attacker struggling with output this season.

Nonetheless, Chelsea need the striker to deliver if they are to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool’s consistency in the league.

According to Canoville, the Blues should offer help. He believes that one of the things they could do is to provide Lukaku with a mentor he could work closely with.

“Here’s a thought,” the Blues icon wrote on Twitter.

“Why don’t Chelsea bring in Didier Drogba on a short-term coaching contract to work with Lukaku? Just thinking out loud here.”

It is hardly a secret that Lukaku is a big fan of Drogba, and they are quite close with each other.

Edouard Mendy, for example, benefitted from working with Petr Cech in the training ground.

Drogba could also be interested in a short-term coaching contract after previously stepping down from his role as a vice-president of Ivory Coast Footballers Association (AFI) last year.
