Michael Olise is currently starring for France at the World Cup, but he could have also been shining for Chelsea had he never been released by the club’s academy.
Unsurprisingly, Olise started in France’s 3-1 win against Senegal on Tuesday and managed to register an assist.
Right now, the Bayern Munich star is arguably the best winger in the world, and he could have been Chelsea’s if things went differently when he was younger.
Anthony Gordon starred for England against Costa Rica but is no longer an option for Chelsea. Which left winger should we now sign? 🤔
Chelsea coach told Michael Olise to join warm-up drill or head inside
In his days as a youth player, it appears that Olise was not always the easiest person to manage.
One source has told football.london that there was an incident during Olise’s time in Chelsea’s academy when he was given an ultimatum by one of the coaches: join his teammates in a warm-up drill or head inside.
According to the source, Olise ignored his coach, did keepy-ups towards the halfway line and booted the ball in the air before deciding to go inside himself.

Olise’s coach would have been frustrated with him at the time, but it is quite a hilarious story.
Whatever attitude Olise had back then has not impacted his career at all. Again, there is probably not a better wide man in football today than the 24-year-old.
Former Chelsea captain John Terry thinks Olise is world-class, and few would disagree with him.

Michael Olise will go down as one of Chelsea’s biggest regrets
Not only did Chelsea release Olise, but they also failed to re-sign him when they had the chance to.
In June 2024, it was reported that Chelsea backed away from a deal to sign Olise because of the total financial package.
Whatever Olise was demanding, though, would have been completely worth it considering the player he has become.
There is no doubt that the France international is now one of Chelsea’s biggest regrets. Opting against bringing him back to the club because of finances was a monumental mistake, one as big as selling Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.
