Chelsea plan to sort out Thiago Silva’s future next year.

That is according to a report from the Evening Standard.

It claims that Chelsea will make a decision on Thiago Silva‘s future in 2024, with the central defender open to staying at Stamford Bridge.

Silva’s £110,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) is up at the end of the season, but he has been a key player under Mauricio Pochettino this term.

He has started all 13 of Chelsea’s Premier League games, though his last one was one to forget. The Blues lost 4-1 against Newcastle United with Silva making a huge mistake, which he has since come out and apologised for.

Are Chelsea going to get rid of Thiago Silva in 2024?

It seems like a possibility and after his error against Newcastle, some may use that as evidence for why it is time for the Brazilian to be moved on.

It could easily be a mistake, though. Overall, Silva has been pretty good for Chelsea this season.

He also has something that most of his team-mates currently lack: leadership qualities and experience.

Reece James, Chelsea’s current captain, showed little of the above on Saturday after he was sent off in the defeat to Newcastle after picking up two silly yellow cards.

Ultimately, the Blues should not be too quick to discard Silva. On top of the Brazil international, though, Pochettino also has Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana for the centre-back positions.

When everyone is fit, that is way too many options for a back four, while we cannot forget that Trevoh Chalobah is still at the club as well.

One of their main centre-half options may have to go, then, and Silva looks like one of the more likely candidates to depart given his age and contract situation. Again, though, Chelsea could end up making quite the mistake by letting the former Paris Saint-Germain captain leave.
