Thomas Tuchel admitted he has been astonished by the intensity of the Premier League despite hearing about it before joining Chelsea.
‘The most competitive league in the world’– that is how a lot of Premier League fans often described the competition.
Not necessarily ‘the best’, obviously, but even Tuchel admitted that there is something about the English top division that makes it different.
Despite his relatively young age as a manager, the 47-year-old has already had over a decade of experience at the top level, having managed in German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1.
And Tuchel was still impressed by the Premier League.
“I knew it, everybody told me [before],” Tuchel told Chelsea TV (via 5th Stand app) when asked about the competitiveness of the Premier League.
“But when you see it, it’s a different feeling — not a surprise, but it [was like]; ‘Wow, [the players] are really tall and really strong’.
“It’s a physical game that is played here.
“Not only in terms of headers and duels in the air but also the passing, the intensity of duels on the ground, the dribbling, and the speed of the game.
“[As well as] the characters of the referees and how they let [the play continues] — it’s amazing.
“It’s a pleasure to be on the sidelines, even without spectators, it’s so easy to be emotional and really feel it because of the intensity.”
Tuchel’s being rather surprised by the Premier League makes it even more impressive how quickly he has adapted and implemented his tactics at Chelsea.
Bear in mind, he did not only make small adjustments but changed the system entirely since day one.
The players also seem to enjoy playing under the new manager, including Callum Hudson-Odoi who praised how passionate Tuchel has been on the touchline.
