Chelsea youngsters Alfie Gilchrist and Josh Brooking trained with the senior squad this week ahead of the game against Brighton.

The Blues host Brighton tonight in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with the pressure firmly on because of the poor Premier League form.

Hopefully, Mauricio Pochettino’s side can enjoy a cup run and try to inject some confidence into a struggling squad.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how much rotation there is to the starting line-up from the team that lost 1-0 against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Chelsea have confirmed via their official website that Alfie Gilchrist and Josh Brooking were both involved in first-team training on Tuesday as preparations for Brighton stepped up.

Will we see either of the Blues academy stars in this evening’s matchday squad, though?

It’s worth noting that both players are still waiting to collect their first minutes at senior level, so let’s hope it’s a memorable date for both of them. Admittedly, throwing them in for a debut against a very strong Brighton side would be a big step.

Gilchrist, who’s only 19, has made the senior matchday squad once so far this season under Pochettino.

The ball-playing centre-back has captained the Under-21s team.

The Chelsea Chronicle actually predicted this week that Gilchrist could make his first-team debut against Brighton.

As for Brooking, he’s another young centre-half at Cobham that has experience playing alongside Gilchrist.

The 21-year-old talent is having to be patient waiting for his opportunity.
