Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is one potential alternative to Moises Caicedo for Chelsea.

That is according to a report from the Evening Standard.

The outlet claims that Amadou Onana is an option for Chelsea if they miss out on Moises Caicedo and that the Blues have already sounded him out.

Caicedo looked like he would join Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp confirmed that his club had an agreement in place with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign the 21-year-old.

“I can confirm the deal that the club has agreed, I don’t know what it means exactly, the player and agreement we will see,” the German told The Independent and other publications during his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.

However, according to one of Sky Sports‘ sources, he has since turned them down, putting Chelsea back in pole position.

Not everyone will be happy if Chelsea sign Amadou Onana

There is going to be some disappointment if Chelsea miss out on Caicedo and have to turn to Onana instead.

Without a doubt, watching their club fail to sign their key target and then end up with a player who almost got relegated last season is going to leave a section of Blues supporters far from happy.

Would Onana be a terrible addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad if the Argentine misses out on Caicedo? Based on what he showed last term, definitely not.

The Belgium international, who cost Everton £33m when he signed from Lille, proved to be quite a physical presence in the middle of pitch at Goodison Park.

Onana stands at around 6 ft 4 and made 2.2 tackles per game in the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign, which was the third-highest average in the Toffees’ squad (WhoScored).

With N’Golo Kante having left Stamford Bridge, Onana is definitely the mould of midfielder Pochettino needs right now.

However, it is clear that the club’s priority is Caicedo, so turning to the former Lille man now would not go down well with Chelsea supporters.
