Chelsea could sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana if Conor Gallagher leaves Stamford Bridge this summer.

That is according to one report from the Evening Standard.

It states that Chelsea have identified Amadou Onana as a possible target in the event that Gallagher departs west London.

The England international has been linked with a move away from the Blues all summer.

Last month, Sky Sports reported that Chelsea rejected a £40m bid from West Ham for Gallagher.

As well as Onana, Chelsea are also thought to have Ajax’s Edson Alvarez and Leeds United’s Tyler Adams on their radar as they prepare for Gallagher’s potential exit.

Amadou Onana is what Chelsea need right now

Onana is the kind of midfielder that Chelsea are lacking at present, someone who can be a real presence in the middle of the park and help them win the ball back.

At Everton, he has proven that he can do that. Last season, he made 2.2 tackles per game, which was the third-highest average in his squad (WhoScored).

It is no wonder that Frank Lampard, who brought him to the Toffees in a £33m deal, is such a huge fan.

“He has many great qualities to help strengthen our midfield and, at just 20-years-old, has massive potential to get even better,” the Chelsea legend told Everton’s official website after Onana’s arrival at Goodison Park.

With all of that being said, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo still has to be the Blues’ priority, especially after putting so much effort into trying to sign him.

It has not paid off yet, with The Athletic claiming last month that Brighton had rejected an £80m bid from Chelsea.

All in all, after N’Golo Kante’s exit, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad now requires a midfielder like Caicedo or Onana. The former would be the dream, but the latter could end up becoming an alternative to the Ecuadorian, as well as a replacement for Gallagher, when you consider his profile.
