Chelsea defender shares what Graham Potter has done differently in training recently

Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly suggested Graham Potter has already tried “a lot of things” in training to solve the team’s goalscoring issues but to no avail.

The Blues have scored the fewest goals (six) in the Premier League since November. So, yeah, it is that bad.

As unbelievable as it is, Chelsea have scored just one in five matches in all competitions in February despite the arrivals of Joao Felix, David Datro Fofana, Noni Madueke, and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Aside from Madueke, the other three had decent goalscoring records at their respective former clubs, so how could they suddenly lose their form?

Are they just struggling to adapt to the Premier League or is having too many new players in a team a bad idea, after all?

Based on Koulbaly’s admission, it is very clear that Potter himself is still trying to understand his players, which usually happens in pre-season, rather than during the season.

“We know we need to improve,” said the Senegal international after Sunday’s defeat (via Chelsea’s official website).

“We are trying a lot of things in training and during the game, we are trying to find the right combinations to score.

“It’s not happening for us at the moment, but when that happens, we have to make sure we keep the opposition at zero [goals].

“We didn’t quite get the balance because Spurs got a second goal and that made things very difficult.

“It is tough for everyone right now.

“For the players, for the supporters, but we must stick together, and we are going to work really hard to get out of this situation.

“We have two big games coming up at Stamford Bridge, and we need to work hard and prepare for those now.”

Potter is now left in a difficult position, in which he has to decide whether he should patiently integrate the new players and prepare for the long term or save his job by picking the players who can win him the next game.

Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s re-emergence at Chelsea suggested that amid the pressure, the manager is choosing the latter, albeit without the results he would have hoped.
