Chelsea are considering making a move to sign a member of Spain’s World Cup squad after they booked their place in the Round of 16 following a win against Austria.

The defending European champions picked up a comfortable win in their Round of 32 tie, with the recently departed Marc Cucurella assisting twice.

The ease at which the result came allowed Spain to make a number of changes late on, including bringing on Ferran Torres.

Chelsea enquire about signing Spain forward Ferran Torres after their World Cup win vs Austria

Chelsea were linked with signing Torres earlier this summer, with him coming towards the end of his contract with Barcelona.

Simon Phillips stated on his Substack that the Blues have now made an enquiry into the forward’s availability in an attempt to make an opportunistic signing in this transfer window.

He said: “Top SPTC source tells me tonight, Chelsea have made an enquiry for Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

“Uncertainty over his future with one year left on his contract. Chelsea looking at opportunities. Just an initial enquiry at this point. Will have to see if anything more comes of it.”

Many believed Chelsea were moving away from opportunisitc signings, and instead targeting the profile of player who would significantly improve their current squad.

This is why there is so much optimism about links to Granit Xhaka and Maxence Lacroix, who would instantly bring much-needed experience and leadership to their squad.

Despite playing less than 2000 minutes in La Liga last season, Torres managed 16 league goals as Barcelona went on to win the title.

His goal total in all competitions reached 21, and Chelsea fans should not turn their nose up at a player who has delivered this level of regular goalscoring.

Reservations may come from his performance at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League group stages last summer. He missed an absolute sitter early on before Chelsea went on to win 3-0.

Despite one bad game, Chelsea are not in a position to turn down goalscorers, especially those who can play in multiple positions across the frontline for Xabi Alonso.
