Chelsea were heavily linked with strengthening their squad with an attacker during the now-closed January transfer window.

One of the names they were strongest linked to was Mathys Tel, after registering early interest in a deal with Bayern Munich that had potential to see Christopher Nkunku go the other way.

The Frenchman stayed put at Stamford Bridge, and Tel went on to join Tottenham despite an eleventh-hour hijack attempt by Chelsea.

Last night saw the Frenchman make his first appearance for his new team in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

Despite starting on the bench, the loanee was not able to have much impact as his side were defeated 4-0 at Anfield.

Chelsea fans were all quick to jump to social media to criticise Tel, and all seemed to question if he was doubting his decision to choose their London rivals on deadline day.

One user said: “Mathys Tel actually rejected Chelsea for this Spurs team. I’ve never seen a more confused player.”

Another added: “Tel chose to join this Tottenham team over Chelsea lmao.”

A third stated: “Tel is not a striker he will struggle as a striker in the premier league.”

Another user claimed: “Tel said he doesn’t wanna sit on the Chelsea bench but mate you sitting on the Spurs now. That’s worse.”

Finally, one user said: “Thank god because this guys no better than Datro Fofana.”

Could Chelsea sign Mathys Tel in the summer?

The Blues are certainly going to make themselves busy in the transfer window again when it reopens at the end of the season.

It has been claimed an attacker is going to be high on their agenda, and their long-standing interest in Tel definitely makes him an option.

However, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglu hinted that the loan addition of the forward was intended to be made permanent, potentially leaving Chelsea looking elsewhere.

Signing an out-and-out striker should be top of their agenda, and they have strongly been linked with Liam Delap, and insiders make the Blues the favourites to pull off that deal.
