Chelsea kept up their recent strong form by beating Rennes 3-0 on Wednesday night – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter singled out their defender Thiago Silva for huge praise for his performance.

The Blues now have seven points from three games in the Champions League group stages, as they comfortably beat French opposition Rennes at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner scored two first-half penalties to put Frank Lampard’s side firmly in the driving seat, especially as Dalbert was sent off for the visitors in the 40th minute.

Tammy Abraham added a third goal in the second-half and the manager had the luxury of making five substitutions to allow players some rest, as well as giving squad players some valuable minutes.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media felt that Silva was a colossus in their defence and deserved a special mention.

Silva has taken no time to settle at Chelsea since his summer arrival, as he’s quickly established himself as a first-choice centre-back and is showing why he’s had such an illustrious career.

The 36-year-old veteran certainly still has top-class ability and made a couple of excellent blocks when asked to defend against Rennes, as well as showing off his range of passing.

He provides such a calming influence on those around him and he was taken off midway through the second-half, presumably so he’s raring to go at the weekend against Sheffield United in the Premier League.
