Chelsea have a new centre-back target: former Manchester City star John Stones.

Stones is available on a free transfer after leaving City last month, and it looks like the Blues are now considering the 32-year-old.

It has been reported that Chelsea have added Stones to their shortlist as they try to improve their backline this summer.

However, Chelsea supporters have doubts as to whether signing the Englishman would actually accomplish that.

Chelsea fans concerned about John Stones’ injury record

Understandably, Chelsea fans have concerns about Stones’ fitness, with the ex-City man only making nine appearances in the Premier League last season.

Back in April, supporters already made it clear on TalkingPoints that they were worried about Stones’ injury record after learning that he would be available on a free transfer this summer.

Discussing whether Chelsea should sign Stones or not, one Blues fan said: “I’d take him because we’re desperate. The injuries are a massive concern though!”

Another said: “He’ll fit in well, hope the treatment room is big enough!!”

Another supporter wrote: “We don’t need to sign another player with injury problems.”

Amid the news that Chelsea are now interested in signing Stones, the England international has become a talking point again.

While Chelsea may hold some interest in Stones, for now, Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix still appears to be at the top of their list.

Chelsea could sign Lacroix for £60m, with talks between the Club World Cup holders and Palace ongoing.

John Stones still worth a gamble

You can understand fans’ concerns about Stones’ injury record. But on a free transfer, he is still worth a punt.

The former Everton man still ticks a lot of boxes. He is experienced, has won trophies and has most of the characteristics of a modern-day centre-back.

On the ball, he is easily one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. If it is Lacroix and Stones, there is really no problem, but the latter alone may not be enough due to his injury history.

Whatever the case, his name is one to keep an eye on between now and the end of the transfer window if you are a Chelsea fan.
