Ethan Ampadu’s rapid rise to stardom has been quite breathtaking.
The son of former professional footballer Kwame Ampadu, Ethan made his senior debut for Exeter City aged just 15 years, 10 months and 26 days.
Ampadu signed for Chelsea on the 1st July 2017 and having just turned 17, made his first team debut coming on for Cesc Fabregas in an EFL Cup match.
And he made his Premier League debut just three months after that.
During the summer, despite loan interest from Football League clubs, Maurizio Sarri blocked any possible move, insisting Ampadu had a place in his first team squad.
New Wales manager Ryan Giggs has clearly also seen Ampadu’s potential, starting the youngster in Giggs’ first competitive match as manager against Ireland.
Not only was it Ampadu’s first start, but it was also Wales’ first game in the new Nations League.
And although Ampadu plays at centre-back, he is also comfortable in midfield, which is where Giggs played him.
Despite being only 17-years-old, Ampadu showed a calmness on the ball and defensive nous that belies his years.
He even provided an assist for Aaron Ramsey on his competitive debut for Wales as they went on to win 4-1
