If you look at Chelsea’s star-studded squad, perhaps the one position that they need to strengthen most ahead of next season is at centre-forward.
With that being said, some Chelsea fans have called for the club to try pick up England captain Harry Kane this summer from London and Premier League rivals Tottenham.
The Blues have made it to an FA Cup final this season and are currently still competing in a Champions League semi-finals, but they do still lack a talisman in attack.
Chelsea have been synonymous in the past couple of decades with powerful attackers to play the lone striker role, Didier Drogba, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Diego Costa being some shining examples. However, their forwards have shared the load this campaign.
Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are both attackers that don’t quite look like natural as number nines. As well as that, the forward pair of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham can’t seem to nail down a position in the XI under manager Thomas Tuchel.
Spurs frontman Kane, 27, is regarded as one of the best centre-forwards in the world, and he’s remarkably scored 219 goals in 331 appearances for the north London club.
However, he’s never won a piece of silverware in his career.
After playing in Spurs’ Carabao Cup 1-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend, Kane has admitted it’s frustrating that he can’t win a trophy with his side.
“I want to be winning the biggest prizes as a team and we are not quite doing that,” Kane said, as quoted by Football Daily.
A selection of Chelsea fans on social media have been quick to respond to Kane’s comment by cheekily suggesting he should make the swap to Stamford Bridge next season.
It would be a transfer that would shock the entire Premier League if it ever took place and send Spurs fans into hiding. Surely not, though.
He’s the all-round striker who’s scored 31 goals in 44 games across all competitions this season already, and he’s been posting phenomenal goalscoring numbers each year in a Spurs team that have always just fallen short of trophies.
Kane is surely the type of player that could be a prolific scorer wherever he went, if he were to leave Spurs, and you could imagine him being the solution to the striker issue at Chelsea.
Blues supporters shouldn’t get too carried away though, as this is just speculation from a hopeful fanbase that are perhaps trying to wind up some rival fans in the process.
There is every chance that all the pieces of the jigsaw could fall into place if Tuchel is allowed to splash the cash on a proven striker in the summer, and his opening few months of the job suggest he can be trusted by the club’s hierarchy to deliver on the pitch.
The German boss may have an upper hand when it comes to transfers next month if he can bag an FA Cup final win over Leicester City. Additionally, his team are still right in the fight to win a Champions League trophy ahead of next week’s semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.
