Chelsea have some extremely talented young players on their books, including Estevao Willian and Mike Penders.

Estevao has shone at Chelsea this season but will not play again after picking up a hamstring injury.

As for Penders, he has impressed while out on loan at Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg and could now link up with Estevao in the summer.

Mike Penders is the highest-rated young goalkeeper

Ultimately, with Estevao and Penders, Chelsea have struck gold. Both players are already very valuable.

In fact, according to the CIES Football Observatory, Penders is actually the highest-rated young goalkeeper in football based on their model.

That is good news for Chelsea, as the goalkeeper position has been an issue for the club this season. They will be hoping that Penders can one day be the solution.

Robert Sanchez had an excellent game against Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last weekend, but he has been too inconsistent.

Regarding his deputy Filip Jorgensen, the Denmark international has not been able to take his opportunity between the sticks. He is currently out injured, which does not exactly help Chelsea’s situation either.

Chelsea’s view of Mike Penders becoming No.1 next season

Penders certainly has the potential to become Chelsea’s No.1, but the 2026/27 campaign may come too soon. He may have to settle for a back-up role instead or go out on another loan.

It is thought that there are some doubts at Chelsea about promoting Penders to No.1. That means Sanchez could be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper for another year.

If so, he needs a faultless season; otherwise, Penders or another shot-stopper will eventually replace him. This is his third full campaign at Stamford Bridge, so he has had enough chances now.

As for Jorgensen, you would expect him to be sold this summer if Penders returns and remains with the first-team squad. It will be impossible to keep all three men happy.
