Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has claimed on the club’s website that Gianluca Vialli passing away is an ‘awful day’ for the club.

The Italian joined the Blues in 1996, winning the FA Cup before taking over as a player-manager two years later.

In his stint in charge, an entertaining Chelsea side won the League Cup against Middlesbrough, as well as achieving glory on the European stage.

He also led the Blues to third in the league, a sensational finish before the heavy investment the club received in years to come.

Current owner Boehly took to the official website to issue a statement paying respect to the impact Vialli had on the club as a player, coach and person.

He said: “This is truly an awful day for Chelsea Football Club. Gianluca’s legend will live on at Stamford Bridge. His impact as a player, a coach and most importantly as a person, will be forever written across our club’s history.

Boehly and James honour Vialli

“We send our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Ruud Gullit was manager of Chelsea when Vialli came in, and although the pair didn’t get on brilliantly at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman also made an emotional statement on Instagram.

He said: “RIP Gianluca Vialli. We will miss you.”

Reece James also shared his condolences on Instagram, saying “One of the very best, such a sad day. RIP Legend.”

The striker may have joined Chelsea in the twilight of his career, but he is rightfully recognised as one of the greatest strikers of his generation.

In his time before moving to England, he achieved glory in the Champions League, as well as a number of league and cup trophies in Italy.

The former Blues player and manager will be sorely missed, with tributes from former teammates and players who have worked under him continuing to come in throughout today.
