Chelsea captain Reece James has been speaking ahead of his side’s first pre-season game against Wrexham.

It is a big Premier League campaign for Reece James coming up after the defender missed the majority of the last one.

In total, James was only able to make 10 appearances in the top flight because of injuries and suspensions.

He is now actually going to miss the beginning of the new Premier League season after picking up a red card last term in Chelsea‘s penultimate game.

Nevertheless, the right-back remains a top player. Kyle Walker recently described James as “complete”.

Reece James’ ultimate goal

The last couple of seasons have been quite disappointing for Chelsea. The Blues have not won any trophies and have also failed to qualify for the Champions League.

James will be hoping that he and his team-mates can put that right in the new campaign. In terms of an individual goal, though, the Englishman simply wants to stay fit.

“If I have one goal, it is to stay on the pitch,” James said when asked about his goals for the season.

If the England international cannot stay injury-free, Enzo Maresca will at least have Malo Gusto to cover. The 21-year-old was excellent for Chelsea last term, coming up with nine assists in 37 appearances.

He returned to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground this summer as one of the fittest players in Maresca’s squad. In one session, Gusto recorded the best result in the bleep test.

Reece James’ suspension

Because of that red card against Brighton & Hove Albion, James will miss Chelsea’s first Premier League game of the 2024/25 season versus Manchester City.

It is a major blow, as Maresca would have wanted his captain and one of the team’s key players for such a huge match.

James will also be unavailable for the following clashes against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace.

The England international does not cost too much on Fantasy Premier League right now. James’ price on FPL is only £5.0m, so as an attacking full-back, the Chelsea star could prove to be a bargain once he returns from suspension — but that is only if he can remain fit.
