Several Chelsea players have sent Ben Chilwell messages on social media after the club confirmed that the defender will miss the 2022 World Cup due to a “significant” hamstring injury.

On Saturday, Chelsea confirmed the 25-year-old is expected to miss the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb.

The defender underwent a scan on his hamstring, and the result unfortunately suggests that the injury is worse than initially expected.

This is obviously a big blow for Chilwell, who had just recovered from a long-term absence due to a partial ACL tear last season.

“Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup,” the England international wrote on Instagram.

“It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results.

“It’s very difficult to take at the moment, but I believe everything happens for a reason. I will do all I can to get back to playing for Chelsea as soon as possible.

“Thank you for the messages of support.”

A number of his Chelsea teammates have shown their support on social media.

Kai Havertz wrote: “Stay strong, bro.”

Raheem Sterling said: “Speedy recovery, brother.”

A few of Chilwell’s England teammates also responded to the news.

“You’ll be back, brother,” West Ham’s Declan Rice wrote.

Chelsea’s official statement did not mention any expected return date for Chilwell, but the left-back will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical department.

A report from The Telegraph claims that despite likely not needing a surgery, the former Leicester City man could be out for up to three months.

Chilwell is the fourth Chelsea player to suffer long-term injury issues, after N’Golo Kante (hamstring), Wesley Fofana (knee), and Reece James (knee).
