Chelsea’s inquest following Liam Rosenior’s sacking continues as the club try to work out why this season has gone so wrong.

Chelsea are now pretty much out of the race for Champions League football and may not even qualify for Europe at this rate.

They are currently eighth in the Premier League table following a run of five consecutive defeats, which made Rosenior’s job untenable.

Chelsea blame Levi Colwill’s injury for this season’s struggles

In this campaign, Chelsea have had a lot of injury problems, and that has obviously not helped them. They started the season without their best central defender: Levi Colwill.

The 23-year-old picked up an ACL injury last summer and has not played a single game this term as a result.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea believe his absence is one reason why Rosenior and the team struggled so much before the Englishman’s exit.

Under Enzo Maresca, Colwill was a key player, making over 40 appearances last season as Chelsea went on to win the Club World Cup and Conference League.

The England international was pivotal in the Blues’ build-up play, passing the ball into midfield and through the lines.

Former Three Lions striker Gary Lineker also thinks Chelsea have missed Colwill, who is playing with the Under-21s right now as he steps up his recovery from injury.

Chelsea are naive if they think Levi Colwill would have saved campaign

Because of the way Colwill is able to help Chelsea build up with his passing, he has been a miss. As well as that, the English centre-back is a good defender and is known to be one of the more vocal players in the dressing room despite still being quite young.

He defends really aggressively, getting tight to his man and letting him know that he is there.

With all of that being said, while Chelsea’s league position probably would look a bit better had Colwill not got injured, he would not have solved every problem.

This is a Chelsea squad still lacking experience. There is no reliable No.1, not enough goals come from the wide players and midfield has become a bit of a problem since Moises Caicedo’s form dipped. Colwill does not fix any of those things.
