Chelsea have been linked with signing a brand-new goalkeeper as Enzo Maresca looks for his side to take a step up to the next level ahead of their return to Champions League football.

Robert Sanchez is currently the club’s number one at the Club World Cup, however supporters haven’t been convinced that he should be the man to fill the position for years to come.

It looks as if the manager is beginning to agree with that point of view. Reports have stated Maresca has lost faith in Sanchez and wants an upgrade.

After a failed attempt to sign Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup got underway, the Blues have now been linked to the signing of Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona.

Chelsea target Marc-Andre ter Stegen has Stamford Bridge history

The veteran goalkeeper has fallen out of favour with the La Liga club, and is now being heavily linked with a move away after 11 years at the club.

During that time, he has only faced Chelsea on two occasions, with that coming in 2018 in the Champions League Round of 16.

The Blues were well beaten in the second leg, however came very close to picking up a famous victory in the first leg which could have changed the outcome of the tie.

Willian had given Antonio Conte’s side the lead after striking the woodwork twice, beating Ter Stegen from range.

However, Lionel Messi’s first goal against Chelsea levelled the tie, and the Blues were unable to breach the German again, despite having Eden Hazard leading the attack.

Ter Stegen signing would solve Chelsea’s biggest issues

Many commenting on the current Chelsea squad have been positive about the side, however do claim they are missing the experience needed to get over the line and win the big prizes.

The 33-year-old has heaps of experience playing in major games for both club and country, and ahead of playing Champions League football again would solve a big issue in the squad.

Chelsea’s current captain, Reece James, is only 25 years of age, but arguably boasts the most big-game experience after he was a key part in the squad who won the trophy in 2021.

After losing experienced voice Marcus Bettinelli to Manchester City, the Blues could do a lot worse than signing Ter Stegen this summer.
