Chris Sutton admits that Thiago Silva’s form in a Chelsea shirt has proven him totally wrong.

Silva, who joined the Blues back in 2020 on a free transfer, decided to take on the Premier League for the first time in his career in his mid-thirties.

Many doubted whether the veteran Brazilian defender would be a big hit at Stamford Bridge. However, the fact that he’s recently signed another contract extension to keep him at the club until 2024 highlights just how superb he’s been in west London.

Now 38, Silva continues to be one of Chelsea’s best performing players after two-and-a-half years in the side.

Chris Sutton owns his mistake on Thiago Silva

BBC pundit Sutton claims that he massively underestimated Silva when he joined Chelsea. In fairness, he’s only joining a long queue of people who did the exact same thing.

When discussing Silva on BBC’s The Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “He’s a phenomenal role model. To carry on at that age and keep that level of performance up.

“I have to say when he went to Chelsea I was one of those who was a bit sceptical thinking he’ll be there for a year and that’ll be that and his career will dwindle, but it’s not and he’s still influencing, which is a testament to him.

“At the World Cup in Qatar he was phenomenal once again.”

Described as “one of the greatest of all time” by Paul Merson, Silva is still operating at the very peak of his powers.

He’s had such an illustrious career at both domestic and international level, but it’s been great for English audiences to be able to watch him in recent years dominating the backline.

It’s somewhat alarming that Graham Potter’s line-up relies so heavily on him still. Blues fans should just enjoy every game he plays, though.

It could be a big job for the Chelsea backline this week when they travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
