Chris Sutton has selected Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as his signing of the season across the entire Premier League.
With Blues shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga enduring a difficult season last year at Stamford Bridge, the club signed a new goalkeeper to compete with him for a starting position.
Chelsea signed Mendy on a five-year deal from Rennes for £22million (Sky Sports) and he’s quickly taken charge as the number one option in net.
The Senegal international has made eight Chelsea appearances so far in all competitions, keeping six clean sheets in return and bringing a real calmness to the defence.
He’s conceded just one goal in his opening four Premier League games and is a big part why the team sit fifth in the table during the international break, with just a three point deficit to the top.
Sutton has named Chelsea’s new first-choice goalkeeper when asked his Premier League signing of the season:
“Edouard Mendy. Chelsea’s big problem was their goalkeeper kept chucking ’em in. That’s now stopped,” Sutton told the Daily Mail.
“I’m not saying Mendy is the greatest keeper in the world, but he’s helped Frank Lampard out of a jam and he cost £22m, which is change down the back of the settee for top-flight clubs.”
Mendy was a fairly unknown talent to Premier League audiences before Chelsea signed him and that’s largely because he had played just 63 top-flight games in his career in France before his switch to the Premier League.
The 6ft 6in colossus has slotted into the Blues XI so effortlessly and supporters are loving the fact he’s on the front-foot when it comes to commanding his penalty box, plus he’s made some strong reflex saves to catch the eye.
