Chris Sutton says that Chelsea star Mason Mount could have done more at Euro 2020 this summer, but believes there is more to come from him in an England shirt.
Mount, 22, started during England’s penalty shootout defeat to Italy on Sunday at Euro 2020.
The attacking midfielder was a regular for the Three Lions this summer at the Euros, but ultimately missed out on silverware.
He got through a massive defensive shift against Italy, so his attacking influence was limited and it was a similar case throughout the tournament.
But, Chelsea supporters know from the last couple of years the kind of quality he possesses.
Perhaps he ran out of steam in the end, but he’s part of only the second England team in history to play in a senior international tournament final.
Sutton graded Mount’s Euros a 6/10. He’s given a mixed verdict on him.
“Southgate loves him, but Mount’s tournament never really took off. He could have done more on the ball, especially in Sunday’s final. Saying that, there can be no doubting his commitment to the defensive side of the game. He’ll always work hard. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Mount is only 22 years old so plenty of England caps await him,” Sutton said.
Mason Mount had special 2020/21 season
For Mount, it’s fair to say he never reached his dizzy heights with England this summer. However, he’s shown he can be a talisman for his country and he was still effective without being the main man. He massively impressed in the quarter-final win over Ukraine.
He didn’t have the fairytale ending he may have hoped for, but the 2020/21 campaign was special for Mount.
The creative playmaker was instrumental in Chelsea winning the Champions League last season.
In addition, his game has developed rapidly at Stamford Bridge in the last year.
