Chris Sutton shares why Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will be ‘laughing’ at everyone right now

It is fair to say not every Chelsea fan has been the biggest fan of Todd Boehly since he took over as one of the owners of the club just over two years ago.

It is well-documented that the club have spent more than a billion pounds on strengthening the squad in that time, although some of the lowest points of the modern era have come in the last 36 months.

Supporters have been heard chanting in protest of Boehly at times, with them desperate for their club to return to the glory days following tenures under Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino.

It is fair to say this is on the way to happening with Enzo Maresca in charge. The Blues currently sit second in the Premier League with a chance to top the table temporarily at the weekend.

A number of big-name signings have been made since the American took the reins. Chelsea have smashed their transfer record twice in that time to sign Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Chris Sutton says Todd Boehly will be laughing at Chelsea critics

The duo are now seen amongst the best midfielders in the Premier League, and a number of other signings who were once mocked are now seen as great pieces of business.

This is why Chris Sutton believes that Boehly and fellow owner, Behdad Eghbali, will be laughing as their plan begins to slowly come together.

He said to Tribal Football: “I think that’s a really interesting point. They were taking all sorts of flak, but maybe, just maybe, there was a method in the madness and they’re laughing their heads off at us all.

“The whole plan did seem excessive, you know? There was nothing particularly new about buying young players and develop them, a lot of clubs have been doing that. In fact, most clubs try and do it that way.

“It was just the nature of the spending. We’ve never seen anything like it, but yeah, they’re probably laughing their heads off right.”
