Chelsea star Cole Palmer was the recipient of the player of the match award in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg last night.

However, at the end of his interview with Sky Sports, he claimed that he believed one of his teammates should have won the award instead.

Palmer had some demons to put to rest after his first leg against Middlesbrough, where he missed a hatful of great chances to find the net.

In a game where they needed to overturn a deficit, they did so in style with a 6-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

The England international found the net either side of half-time, further extending his place as the club’s top scorer in all competitions.

Gary Neville, who was commentating on the game, was particularly impressed with the 21-year-old’s display, naming him the player of the match in the final few minutes.

However, when accepting the award he couldn’t help but tell teammate Axel Disasi that he could have won the award himself.

Playing out of position in right-back, the 24-year-old put in a commanding performance which he capped off with his second goal for the club.

With Malo Gusto and Reece James currently on the sidelines, it could be a prolonged period of time where the Frenchman is forced to feature wide in the coming weeks.

While he has not always starred there in comparison to his performances at the heart of defence, however his goal showed that there is some attacking ability in the big man that we perhaps hadn’t seen before.

With the return of Ben Chilwell showing Mauricio Pochettino that he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet, balancing the backline with a more defensive option on the other side could end up being a wise move for a side who have struggled to keep clean sheets.
