Chelsea could have signed Morgan Rogers from Premier League rivals Aston Villa last summer.
Chelsea’s long-term interest in Rogers has been well-documented, and the club have finally got their hands on him.
According to Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, the Blues actually came very close to signing Rogers after winning the Club World Cup last year. However, they wanted Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens to be their left-wing options in the end.
With that in mind, how did the trio compare last season? Well, there is no doubt that Rogers had the best campaign out of the three.
Unlike Garnacho and Gittens, Rogers was able to get his hands on some silverware after Villa’s triumph in the Europa League.
Individually, Rogers also had a far better season than Garnacho and Gittens. For example, in the Premier League, he scored 10 goals and provided seven assists.
Garnacho only managed to score one goal, while Gittens could not find the back of the net at all. However, the England Under-21 international did register a couple of assists, while Garnacho recorded four in total.

Of course, as one of the first names on Villa’s team sheets, Rogers did play more matches. His averages per game are still better than Chelsea’s two left wingers, though.
According to WhoScored, Rogers made 1.3 key passes and completed 1.1 dribbles per game in the Premier League. Garnacho had averages of 1.2 and 0.6 respectively, while Gittens’ averages were 0.6 and 0.8.
Rogers is not the finished article yet, even though many will feel that he should be given his price tag.
But it is clear that Rogers gives you more than the likes of Garnacho and Gittens right now.
Paul Merson does not think Chelsea need Rogers, but it is hard to agree with that after what happened with Garnacho and Gittens last term.
