Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella has just been called up into the Spain squad for the first time in nearly three years.

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella, 25, is only recently back for his club after a couple of months out injured with an ankle problem.

The aggressive left-back completed back-to-back 90 minutes for the Blues last week, impressing in wins against Newcastle United (Premier League) and Leicester City (FA Cup).

Now he’s been rewarded with a late call-up to Spain’s senior squad during this current March international break. Incidentally, it’s his first time in the Spanish camp since June 2021.

The Spanish national side confirmed via their X account that Cucurella’s replaced Valencia’s Jose Gaya in the squad.

It’s a great reward for a Chelsea player who’s had an up and down spell at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella celebrated the news of his international recall with an Instagram post yesterday.

Chelsea teammates Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile both responded with congrats in the comment section, too.

Marc Cucurella call-up

Let’s hope this is just the beginning of Cucurella’s redemption arc at Chelsea.

The Blues paid £60 million (Sky Sports) to sign the Spanish defender from rivals Brighton in 2022, which has turned out to be a horrible bit of business by the club.

However, the all-action full-back does show signs of why he cost so much and we think he could still be a top player if he cuts out the rashness from his game.

The Chelsea Chronicle recently argued that Cucurella could yet grow into a crucial player at Stamford Bridge if he defends a bit more intelligently.

While Cucurella is away with Spain across the two-week international break, Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell is with England. It could be a fascinating battle between the two Blues left-backs during the rest of the season if they can both stay fit and compete against each other for a starting position.
