‘Could have told you this’: Ben Foster not surprised £160k-a-week Chelsea player has struggled this season

Ben Foster has explained he’s not surprised by the form of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Chelsea this season.

Aubameyang, 33, completed his move in the summer from Barcelona to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea giving the former Arsenal striker another crack in the Premier League.

However, the £160,000-a-week centre-forward has struggled with only three goals in 14 Blues appearances so far this season.

He’s not started either of Chelsea’s two games post-World Cup, so it does look like he’s slipped behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order under head coach Graham Potter.

Foster not surprised by Aubameyang

Ben Foster suggests he never expected Aubameyang to be a big success following his move to Chelsea this campaign.

When discussing Aubameyang’s time at Chelsea, Foster told his YouTube channel: “I could have told you this before the season started. When they signed him, I thought, ‘That’s not going to do anything.”

Aubameyang has been a goal machine throughout his career at various clubs, so you can understand why the Blues took a punt on him. He joined at a time when Thomas Tuchel was still in the managerial dugout, though.

His transfer is one that’s beginning to look worse every week with the less impact he makes.

Tony Pulis recently claimed he didn’t expect Aubameyang to play a regular role under Potter, which is something that’s starting to come true.

It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of chances the experienced attacker gets moving forward.

The Blues play Manchester City twice this week in the space of a few days, with clashes in both the Premier League and FA Cup.

In our view, Aubameyang deserves another shot at least to lead the line. It’s worth remembering he’s one of the few senior players that didn’t go to the World Cup and had extra time working under Potter.
