Joe Cole calls out new Chelsea signing who kept repeating mistake v Dinamo Zagreb

Former Blue Joe Cole has criticised new Chelsea signing Kalidou Koulibaly’s poor defensive positioning in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

As Thomas Tuchel pointed out after the game, it was the same old story for the Blues.

They had more of the ball but struggled to convert it into big goalscoring opportunities.

While it is pretty clear that Chelsea have a serious problem in their attack, they have hardly been much better at the other end of the pitch as well.

Tuesday’s result means Tuchel’s men have kept just one clean sheet, in the Premier League opener against Everton, so far this season.

Cole highlighted how even an experienced player such as Koulibaly underperformed in Zagreb.

“Where do you start?” Cole told BT Sport (via Metro) in reaction to his former team’s disappointing performance.

“The guys at the back have got to pull it together as soon as possible.

“People will look at the goal, but we could have pulled out countless examples when Koulibaly was the wrong side of his man.

“For a 31-year-old defender, he needs to get up to speed quickly.”

It was always going to take time for Chelsea’s new defensive line to gel considering the number of new players in this area.

As Cole pointed out, however, they do not seem to have that luxury at the moment.

This is their third consecutive defeat, their first since their poor run in December 2020 under Frank Lampard, which led to the club legend’s eventual sacking.
