Alan Shearer has claimed on BBC Sport that it would be crazy for Chelsea to sack Graham Potter.

The former Brighton man’s dismal run of form continued last night with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

The loss saw the club exit the FA Cup at the third round stage for the first time in 25 years.

After a nine-game unbeaten streak across the Premier League and Champions League that began his time at the club, things have certainly taken a downwards turn since then.

Their poor form has seen them slip to 10th in the league, although they do hold a game in hand on the majority of clubs above them.

Under the previous ownership and Roman Abramovich, Potter may well have been massively fearing for his job despite the issues being present before he joined the club.

Shearer has claimed that with everything going on at Stamford Bridge, the new owners would be crazy to sack the manager.

He said: “They have to stick with him, it would be crazy to do anything else. They have spent a fortune again but are lacking someone who can put the ball in the back of the net.

“They have to stick together and stick with him and give him time to turn it around. There is a reason they went for him, a reason they took all his staff with him and they have to give him time.”

Potter will now attempt to move on from the embarrassing defeat yesterday with a local derby against Fulham on Thursday.

The 2021 Champions League winners will need to win at Craven Cottage in a few days’ time to go above both of their West London rivals in the league table again.
