Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has hinted that Chelsea could potentially have spent their money better than signing Moises Caicedo.

He told ‘The Footballer’s Football Podcast’ that you could sign Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and himself for the same price as the Ecuador international.

Monday saw the Blues announce a deal that finally brought Caicedo in for what ended up being a club-record fee.

They were forced to fend off late interest from Liverpool, which saw them probably end up paying more than they were hoping to for the Brighton man.

Nevertheless, he is in the squad and looking to make his debut against West Ham United on Sunday.

The fee has of course caught a lot of people’s attention, with Wilson now saying that the money could have been spent elsewhere, taking his own side into account.

Wilson questions Caicedo money

He said: “How many midfielders do they want? Let’s put this into context. Caicedo, I have not really seen much of him in midfield. We played against Brighton and he played at right-back against us.

“But for the price that he’s cost, you could get Tonali and Guimaraes and still have change to buy me, probably! £15 or £20 million gets you me! That’s how the money is going crazy. It’s probably just because it’s Premier League to Premier League.

“If he was coming in from somewhere else, like what Brighton did, you are buying him for £4 million. You are making over £100 million profit, it’s crazy.”

Despite the fee, the gap the Ecuador international fills is very clear to see.

The aim is to form a sensational partnership in midfield with Enzo Fernandez, who has shown he may be taking his game to another level after a very impressive display against Liverpool.
