Graham Potter has claimed in his pre-match press conference that Chelsea need to play better as a team in order to get the best out of Raheem Sterling.
The 27-year-old has undergone somewhat of a goal drought since the former Brighton man came in, although it certainly can’t be put down to a lack of minutes.
However, the winger will cite a range of positions he has been asked to play in, as Potter continues to work on a system to move forward with at Stamford Bridge.
This has included featuring in both wing-back roles, with his appearances there coming with mixed results.
He was the shining light in Potter’s first game in charge while featuring at left wing-back, however he struggled far more in the Premier League since.
Potter explains Sterling drought
Potter has claimed that it depends on how the whole team plays regarding Sterling’s performances, saying they need to create more chances in order to bring the best out of the key man.
He said: “No. Raheem’s quality speaks for itself. Sometimes the team doesn’t function as well and then the forwards can suffer. So rather than zoom in on the individual it’s better for me to think about the team and how we can attack better, and how we can create more chances for Raheem.”
Sterling will surely feature again tomorrow, as Potter prepares for his first competitive trip back to Brighton.
The Seagulls are still chasing European places, and have looked impressive despite not yet picking up a win since he departed.
Sterling will be hoping for a more advanced role tomorrow, with him knowing better than most of the goal drought he is on.
On a personal level, he will be hopeful that he can find some form in front of goal before the World Cup gets underway in three weeks time.
