David Moyes says £145k-a-week Chelsea star is vital to success under Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is a key reason why there has been so much success for Blues boss Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, according to rival Premier League manager David Moyes.

Tuchel, 47, has won the Champions League during his first half a year as Chelsea manager.

The German coach turned around the team’s fortunes after a mid-season appointment and has now cemented his spot in the club’s history.

It’s obvious the biggest change he implemented was the switch to three centre-backs with wing-backs either side.

West Ham boss Moyes has highlighted the formation change as a key to Chelsea’s success. In addition, he believes the role of Azpilicueta is so vital for his London rivals.

“Often the problem with a back three is the centre backs not being happy going into full-back areas. A reason Chelsea have played the system so well is César Azpilicueta’s versatility: he is happy being a full back or centre back,” Moyes wrote for The Times.

Azpilicueta an expert as a right-sided centre-back

Chelsea fans will fondly remember the last time the club won the Premier League, which was when Italian boss Antonio Conte was in charge.

His 3-4-3 formation was so effective at Stamford Bridge and £1450,000-a-week star Azpilicueta played a key role in that position during a title-winning campaign.

The 31-year-old’s flexibility to play anywhere across the defence makes him so valuable, but a centre-back in a three-man defence is perfect.

Chelsea’s right wing-back Reece James will feel great with club captain Azpilicueta behind him. Similarly, Victor Moses will have had the same feeling back in the 2016/17 campaign.

In addition, Azpilicueta can be a strong attacking threat himself, too.
