Glen Johnson is not too convinced by one of Chelsea’s reported transfer targets.

Chelsea have the chance to strengthen their squad with the window open this month and, according to the Evening Standard, the club have already made an enquiry about Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.

He has impressed in the Primeira Liga this season, but Glen Johnson has told GGRecon that the Portuguese league is a completely different division to its English counterpart.

Gyokeres has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances in the Portuguese top flight.

While Gyokeres is having a good campaign, Johnson is not jumping on the bandwagon just yet.

On the 25-year-old, he said: “I believe that’s a move they should avoid. There are not many players that can be playing in the Championship one season and then play for one of the Premier League’s biggest teams the next.

“If he was good enough to, then he should have been scoring 35 goals-a-season in the Championship and showing that he was streets and streets ahead of everybody else and he wasn’t.

“At Sporting Lisbon, he’s playing in an easier league than the Premier League and yes, I realise he’s scoring goals, but I definitely have question marks over him.”

Chelsea should avoid Viktor Gyokeres

Chelsea do need to sign a new striker. Nicolas Jackson is currently away with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations and has had an up and down season.

While the 22-year-old has managed to score seven goals in the Premier League, he has missed a lot of chances.

For now, though, Chelsea would be wise to hold off from making a move for Gyokeres. The Sweden international needs to do a little bit more at a high level.

To buy him now after a couple of good seasons in the Portuguese league and Championship would be quite a gamble.

The Blues should wait for him to at least finish the current campaign before making a swoop for the former Coventry City man, though Mauricio Pochettino may feel he needs a new centre-forward immediately.
