Frank Lampard is expected to sign the contract which will see him in charge of Chelsea as a caretaker until the end of the season in the next 24 hours, according to reputable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

An earlier report from The Guardian claimed that the Blues opened talks with Lampard on Wednesday afternoon and offered him a short-term role to replace Bruno Saltor as an interim manager.

Lampard, who is currently out of work after being sacked by Everton in January, is reportedly ready to help the club.

The talks likely went smoothly as Di Marzio claims on his website that the 44-year-old will sign his contract in the next 24 hours.

Lampard’s appointment would give the Chelsea hierarchy more time in their search for a new permanent manager.

Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique are said to be the leading candidates for this position, but the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Ruben Amorim are reportedly appreciated by the club as well.

Saltor, who was in charge of Chelsea in the goalless draw against Liverpool on Tuesday previously admitted that he did not really enjoy his first experience leading the team.

This likely gives the Chelsea board another reason to appoint Lampard as a replacement.

Just like in 2019, when he was first appointed as a Chelsea manager when the club were dealt a transfer ban, Lampard could face a big task of closing the gap to the top four and ahead of the Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.
