Didier Drogba has congratulated Chelsea star Edouard Mendy on Instagram, who won an individual award yesterday with UEFA.
Mendy, 29, clinched the prize on Thursday as the UEFA men’s Champions League goalkeeper of the year. Likewise, N’Golo Kante won the midfielder of the year for the 2020/21 campaign.
It was no surprise to see Chelsea feature heavily at yesterday’s event due to the fact they won last season’s Champions League. Jorginho was named men’s player of the year, while Blues manager Thomas Tuchel was named coach of the year.
At the heart of Chelsea’s success in Europe last year was Mendy, who kept nine clean sheets in 12 Champions League appearances.
The £22million shot-stopper was a colossus in net to help the Blues win the trophy, so his transfer fee now looks a massive bargain.
Mendy celebrated his award with a heartfelt post on Instagram, which club legend Drogba replied to.
“It’s largely deserved. So proud of you,” Drogba said.
Can Chelsea and Edouard Mendy win it again this season?
For Chelsea, it was a remarkable achievement to win the Champions League last year.
It feels like a lot of attention is on Tuchel’s side to see what they can achieve domestically this campaign, but can they replicate European glory again?
First of all, it’s worth noting there has been four different winners of the competition in the last four seasons. It’s extremely difficult to regain the trophy. Secondly, some of the transfer business conducted across Europe means that teams are getting stronger.
Chelsea have been drawn alongside Juventus, Zenit and Malmo in Group H of this season’s Champions League, so fingers crossed they can launch another bid for the prize.
