Does Callum Hudson-Odoi deserve a regular starting spot after impressive performance?

Callum Hudson-Odoi looked back to his best on Sunday against Nottingham Forest. He received praise from fans and his manager Frank Lampard alike after an impressive showing that included a goal. But has that performance earned him a regular spot in Chelsea’s starting team?

Since his return from an achilles injury, the 19-year-old has been tried and tested on both wings. He first appeared on the right side of the front three last season under Maurizio Sarri and looked dangerous almost every time he stepped onto the pitch.

When played on the left side this season, Hudson-Odoi has not looked like quite the same player. Whether that is because of injury fears, a lack of confidence or that he is more suited to the other side is yet to be established.

However, his performance on Sunday operating on the right side of the Chelsea attack was very impressive. The England U-21 star looked dangerous every time he got the ball and kept the Forest defenders guessing with his ability to put a cross in with his right foot or come inside onto his left.

The understanding he showed with Reece James is another reason for him to be a regular starter. The pair grew up playing together and looked very in sync against a decent Championship outfit.

Willian has been Lampard’s preferred choice for the right-wing spot this season. The Brazilian has been impressive but is not getting any younger. Hudson-Odoi will only get better as he is given more opportunities to develop.

The upcoming game against Burnley presents the Blues manager with an opportunity to give CHO some more Premier League minutes.
