TalkSPORT pundit Tim Sherwood has urged Gareth Southgate to select Jack Grealish and Phil Foden ahead of Raheem Sterling at this winter’s World Cup.

There is just over a month until England get their tournament underway with the first group game against Iran.

With injuries beginning to stack up, the Three Lions boss is having more and more headaches over team selection for the unprecedented competition.

Chelsea man Reece James has been all-but ruled out of the tournament due to injury, with him sure to have been the first choice option for the right of defence.

There are also question marks over the attack England will go with, following an extremely uninspiring Nations League campaign.

Sherwood urges Southgate to drop Sterling

Southgate’s side were only joined by San Marino in not scoring a goal from open play in the opening five group games, before Luke Shaw and Mason Mount struck against Germany.

Sherwood has claimed there should be a change to the normal selection of forwards, and Chelsea’s Sterling will need to make way.

He said: “Foden on the right, Harry Kane down the middle and Jack Grealish on the left. Die on your sword. Don’t be boring, have a go. That is what that message is.”

While there is an embarrassment of riches in terms of England attackers, it’s hard to make an argument against the 27-year-old featuring from the start.

The former Manchester City man scored all of the country’s goals in the group stages of last year’s European Championships, with him also being the one to break the deadlock in the hotly-contested match against Germany.

He has got off to a decent start since moving to Chelsea too, with him sometimes being utilised in a wing-back role when injuries or squad rotation has deemed it necessary.
