Fabrizio Romano has squashed the speculations that Mason Mount’s absence in Saturday’s defeat to Wolves had something to do with his contract situation.
Following Frank Lampard’s appointment as a caretaker manager, many, including Harry Redknapp, expect Mount to return to being a regular starter at Chelsea.
So, when the versatile midfielder’s not making the squad against Wolves on Saturday raised some eyebrows.
After the game, Lampard confirmed earlier reports that Mount suffered an injury setback in training.
“Mason had a feeling in his pelvic area, an injury he has been carrying the last few days,” he explained in his post-match press conference.
“He has trained in those days but has struggled a little bit.”

Some of the fans, however, refused to buy it and there have been speculations that it was an order from the club hierarchy amid the uncertainty over Mount’s future at the club.
This is nonsense, according to Romano.
“Mount is injured. This is why he didn’t play against Wolves and why he’s still an [doubt] against Real Madrid,” the Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel.
“He’s injured and nothing related to his contract for Chelsea.
“Chelsea [do not have] any problem with Mount playing, even if he’s not extending the contract at this stage.
“The negotiations will resume at the end of the season — this is the idea, so May, June…
“From what I understand, the new [long-term manager] could change the situation, but not Frank Lampard.
“Lampard is focusing on helping Chelsea right now.”
