Moises Caicedo’s Ecuador side are now staring down the barrel of a shock World Cup exit after a 0-0 draw with Curacao, with the Chelsea man amongst those feeling the fury of national media.

The South American side were desperate for a victory after suffering defeat in the last minute of their opening game to Ivory Coast.

They elected not to start Kendry Paez again. His future is currently up in the air after reports that his loan at River Plate has now been terminated.

Within the first couple of minutes, Caicedo should have had an assist to his name, after his glorious long pass didn’t get the finish it deserved by Enner Valencia.

Ecuador struggled to make the breakthrough, and despite registering an extortionate amount of shots, failed to beat the goalkeeper on any occasion.

Primicias were not impressed with how Caicedo performed, stating he has not brought his best form to the World Cup.

They said: “The theory fell apart in practice. ‘Moi’ Caicedo is not in his best form, and although his mission was to press high up the pitch against Curazao, the pull of self-doubt kept making him retreat. He ended up constantly marking Alcívar and Vite.”

“The result was a tactical contradiction: three central midfielders to face an opponent that abandoned attacking and entrenched itself with ten men.

Caicedo was also trusted with taking the majority of his country’s attacking set pieces, a role he has not been required to do before at Stamford Bridge.

Ecuador’s final game of the group stage will be against Germany, who have already confirmed their place in the Round of 32 with two victories.

The South Americans will perhaps be hoping Julian Nagelsmann’s side will rest some of their big hitters as they face an uphill battle to make the knockout stages of the competition.
