Edouard Mendy’s spoken for the first time since Chelsea were beaten at the weekend in the Carabao Cup final.
Unfortunately, the Blues were beaten 11-10 on penalties against Liverpool. Chelsea’s decision to bring on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the closing stages of extra time completely backfired, as he failed to make a save before missing his own spot-kick.
For 120 minutes, it was one of the best 0-0 scorelines you’re likely to see with so many goalscoring chances for both teams.
Blues goalkeeper Mendy, 30, was an absolute colossus in-between the sticks before his late substitution.
The Senegal international made several top-class saves, including one from compatriot Sadio Mane at point-blank range.
BBC pundit Chris Sutton suggests he will have been “angry” about the decision from his manager Thomas Tuchel to take him off the pitch for penalties.
However, Mendy’s uploaded a post on Instagram last night with a heartfelt message to break his silence from the weekend result.
Chelsea GK staying at the top
Mendy’s form since he put on a Chelsea shirt in 2020 proves this is no longer just a purple patch of form.
The 6f 4in African star currently belongs in the conversation for the best shot-stopper in the world.
His reaction to the penalty drama shows what an impressive professional he is, and the club are extremely lucky to have him.
Tuchel’s side may have missed out on silverware in the Liverpool thriller at Wembley Stadium, but there is every chance they can still go deep into the FA Cup or Champions League during the final few months of the season.
