Chelsea’s Levi Colwill celebrated his senior England debut last night with a 1-0 win at Wembley Stadium over Australia.

Levi Colwill, who’s still only 20, is one of the most exciting youngsters in a very inexperienced squad at Chelsea.

The defender’s been a mainstay in the Blues line-up at the start of the season. He’s now followed that up with recognition on the senior international stage, too.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins scored the winning goal in England’s narrow victory against Australia in Friday night’s friendly match.

Hopefully, Colwill has just earned the first of many Three Lions caps.

English media delivered an interesting verdict on Colwill’s performance yesterday.

It’s worth noting that the pressure and spotlight increases tenfold when you represent England’s senior team.

Thankfully, the general consensus around Colwill’s debut was positive. It may still be some time until he breaks into the best XI, though.

The Evening Standard wrote: “Levi Colwill – 7. A really promising England debut in a left-back position in which he looks increasingly comfortable. A player who can do both sides of the game.”

The Daily Express wrote: “Levi Colwill – 6. Colwill enjoyed a sturdy England debut at left-back. The Chelsea starlet will one day form part of England’s first-choice centre-back partnership – but the 21-year-old is a little while away from that.”

The Telegraph wrote: “Levi Colwill – 6/10. Got involved in a shoving match with [Keanu] Baccus and picked up a yellow card. Looks comfortable at left-back, where he plays for Chelsea, and could be useful back-up.”

Just like in the opening months of the season, Colwill put in a steady contribution at left-back.

He’s a natural centre-half, which is why he doesn’t get too adventurous with his attacking contributions, but the defensive side of his game is pretty solid.

It was a kind introduction into England’s senior fold in a friendly against Australia, so it’ll be interesting to see if Gareth Southgate is prepared to rely on him in more pressured situations.
