Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has now taken to social media to react to the news that Emi Martinez picked up the award for best goalkeeper of the year.

He posted an Instagram story congratulating his international teammate on his award at last night’s Balon d’Or ceremony.

Martinez has previously been a transfer target of many Premier League sides, with Chelsea just one of those very interested in a deal.

However, Aston Villa’s £17m signing has continued to show his abilities at Villa Park, although his starring role was certainly played on the international stage.

Alongside Fernandez, Martinez played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup victory just under a year ago. The duo were both named as award winners at the competition alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

Now, the 22-year-old midfielder has taken to Instagram to praise the goalkeeper, saying he deserved the award.

He said: “Congratulations friend but it’s well deserved.”

While the Blues never fully committed to a deal to sign Martinez over the summer, there will certainly be some supporters who have been left wishing they did.

The confidence in Robert Sanchez is certainly not universal at Stamford Bridge right now, despite him starting every game of this season so far.

However, a number of unconvincing moments have left many hoping that a new goalkeeper is signed in an upcoming transfer window just weeks after they brought in two new ones.

Djordje Petrovic is the other name who came through the door, however he is yet to be given a chance to prove his worth since his transfer from the MLS last summer.

The EFL Cup tie against Blackburn tomorrow presents the perfect opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino to hand the young goalkeeper his debut for the club.
