One of Chelsea’s most promising young talents has been linked with a move away from the club after his excellent start to life as a first team player.
Josh Acheampong is now a regular in Enzo Maresca’s first team squad following his call up from the academy alongside Tyrique George last season.
This has resulted in a number of starts for his boyhood club. Acheampong impressed greatly in the Club World Cup group stage victory against ES Tunis.
However, with him not a recognised starter, it seems some other sides are keeping tabs on the situation to see if they can strike a deal.
Enzo Maresca’s personal message to Josh Acheampong amid transfer interest
Multiple clubs are monitoring Acheampong, noting that he is facing competition from Reece James and Malo Gusto for a place in the side.
Despite plenty of interest in signing him, Acheampong has claimed that Maresca has been extremely helpful for the young players, and has told him he believes he is a ‘good player’.
He told the Mail Online: “I don’t really look at it. I don’t pay attention to any of that. I just focus on my football. I don’t really think about my future. I just want to win the next game and do as well as we can.
“I think it’s important to get the trust from the manager. Every time I play, I want to do as well as I can. Enzo’s really good with the young lads. He’s really approachable. If you’ve got any questions you want to ask him, he’ll be there for you.
“Enzo said he thinks I’m a good player. I love the club, so I always want to stay at Chelsea and just show what I can do. I wouldn’t say I have a preferred position right now. I don’t really mind as long as I can play. I’m not too fussed. Just whatever Enzo wants from me, I’ll try and do.”
Maresca helped keep Acheampong at Chelsea
Earlier this season, Acheampong was frozen out of all Chelsea duties due to him not putting pen to paper yet on a new contract with the club.
Todd Boehly has made it clear since taking over the club that he doesn’t want players to enter the last year of their deals, opening up the chance for them to leave for free.
However, he ended up signing a new deal with the club, and it has been claimed that Maresca personally convinced Acheampong to commit his future to the Blues.
With a Conference League trophy now in his personal cabinet, things are already going in the right direction for the young defender at Stamford Bridge.
