Enzo Maresca shares if Chelsea are planning to sign a defender in the January transfer window

After a busy summer transfer window again, it can be expected that the January window will not mirror that as far as Chelsea are concerned.

Last season the Blues did not make a permanent signing in the middle of the season, 12 months after they brought in the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke to try and turn around their dreadful campaign.

Enzo Maresca is already managing a big squad, although has been praised for how he has managed to give a large amount of quality players minutes in all competitions this season.

One position that has very rarely changed in the Premier League during this campaign is centre-back, and in fact the only switches have been when enforced.

Chelsea not set to sign new defender in January

The manager has settled on a back two of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, although the Frenchman is currently out of action due to injury.

Despite Fofana’s issue, as well as regular problems still for Reece James at the back, Maresca has stated that there are currently no plans in the works for the Blues to address the position in January

He said: “No, we are not thinking at all about the January transfer window. We still have many games before that. We still have many games before January and the focus is on the amount of games before that.”

Benoit Badiashile linked with Chelsea exit

Against Tottenham it was Benoit Badiashile who was named in the starting side in place of Fofana. Jamie Redknapp claimed Badiashile looked uncomfortable filling his role.

Reports have claimed that Marseille have opened talks over signing Badiashile, although Maresca was against his exit.

However, with just two Premier League starts under his belt this season though, it is clear he is not currently at the top of the manager’s priority list, and a move away cannot be ruled out at this stage.
